It all begins with an underpainting. Well, if you are following the methodologies of the ‘old masters’, then it starts with an underpainting. A Bistre is a painting technique that allows the artist to get rid of the pristine -and intimidating- white of the canvas while establishing value and contrast to a composition in one sitting, quickly. Details are avoided, but compositional layout and relationships between shapes and placement are developed.

Below is an example of one type of underpainting, the first layer of a painting (called an Imprimatura), this is a bistre :
